Pima Prevention Partnership (PPP) and its partners – SAAF, Terros Health, Tanner Community Development Corporation, and ASHLine – began by addressing the tobacco use prevention and cessation needs of GSM communities. We conducted the first ever statewide survey of GSM populations’ attitudes about tobacco and their tobacco use. Consistent with other surveys, Fresh AZ survey GSM respondents (n=831) reported a tobacco use rate that is 2.7 times the rate of Arizona adults and little more than 2 times the use rate of U.S. adults.
PPP is currently working with the national non-profit CenterLink and its LGBT HealthLink initiative to develop the readiness of Arizona-located GSM-serving health organizations and GSM advocacy organizations to increase institutionalization of inclusive and effective tobacco use prevention and cessation services.
In FY15 & FY16, Arizona collaborated with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning/Gender and Sexual
Minorities (LGBTQ/GSM) community members around the state to develop an advisory group to guide LGBTQ/GSM
efforts. In FY15, Arizona was awarded a Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Grant from the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) to further LGBTQ/GSM efforts.
Through a competitive process, PPP was awarded a sub grant to implement a survey which is currently establishing a baseline for smoking rates in Arizona and this community — to understand attitudes about tobacco prevention and cessation.
Arizona Department of Health Services | Biennial Report
Students Taking a New Direction (STAND) – across Arizona are saving lives by promoting local 400+ youth in 30 coalitions ordinances that reduce the negative impacts of tobacco on themselves, friends, and their families.
Their activism has resulted in smoke-free parks, prohibiting smoking in cars when a minor is present, and raising the age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21 years old. PPP staff members train these remarkable youth advocates in tobacco issues and working with their local government officials.
